Okapi's for Christmas!!!

Okapi's for Christmas!!!

Wait...what?? You've never heard of an Okapi? You better brush up on your little-known threatened species from Central Africa then.

The WWF (World Wildlife Fund, not the wrestling federation) is currently having a massive blowout sale with door busters on all threatened species!!! If there was ever a Christmas gift to become a total idiot over, this is it folks.

Okay, so you don't really get to buy the threatened animal, but you do get to adopt one, and with every donation $50 and over you get an adoption certificate, photo, gift bag and a stuffed animal of your adopted animal in return (donations of $25 gets you the certificate and picture).

So go down your Christmas lists this year and choose a different animal for everyone on it. Come on, who wouldn't want a Three-Toed Sloth, Giant Anteater, Sumatran Rhino or African Wild Dog under the Christmas tree this year? Believe it or not, every single one of those animals is actually pretty damn cute in stuffed animal form. You can choose from over 90 different species to adopt, each with a corresponding stuffed animal.

Have a humane holiday and don't forget to vote!

Have a humane holiday and don't forget to vote!

As we head into the holiday season, I am reminded that many religious traditions have a strong connection to food, from feasting to fasting and praying for thanks. It seems appropriate, then, to consider where our food comes from. In factory farms all over the country, chickens, pigs and cows are warehoused in cages and pens so small they cannot even turn around. Many of us already support small farmers who raise animals more humanely but it is difficult for them to compete in a market where suffering is generated for greater profits.

If you’re concerned about the welfare of animals and the small farmer that raises them humanely, there are four things you can do:

1) If you live in California, vote YES on Prop 2 to give animals the right to stand up, turn around or spread their wings in their cages. If you don’t live in California, please support the passing of this historic bill that will have an impact on the welfare of animals all over the country. Spread the word to your California friends or donate to help ease the suffering of 20 million animals.

2) Sign the Humane Society pledge to eat more humanely this month. HSUS fights for the welfare of domestic, wild and farm animals and has recently partnered with religious leaders from all faiths who remind us of our responsibility to honor the environment and all creatures great and small.

3) Raise your own chickens, eat grass-fed beef or consider visiting a local farm. In the last year, I’ve watched as all of my friends have started talking about food. They have planted their own vegetable gardens, signed up for CSAs to receive fresh meat and vegetables directly from farmers, are shopping at farmer’s markets, visiting their local farms to see where their food comes from and three are now raising chickens! Chickens make very sweet pets. They can be social and affectionate and are easy to keep in the backyard in cute modern chicken houses. What better way to get fresh free-range eggs?

4) Vote for Obama-Biden. Barack Obama, has just became the first presidential candidate endorsed by the Humane Society: “Voters who care about protecting wildlife from inhumane and unsporting abuses, enforcing the laws that combat large-scale cruelties like dogfighting and puppy mills, providing humane treatment of animals in agriculture, and addressing other challenges that face animals in our nation, must become active over the next six weeks to elect a president and vice president who share our values. Please spread the word, and tell friends and family members that an honest assessment of the records of the two presidential tickets leads to the inescapable conclusion that Obama-Biden is the choice for humane-minded voters.”

Where the horses are wild....

Where the horses are wild....

I just read an article on Walletpop about the top 25 things vanishing from America. The countdown covers a lot of things that will surely not be missed and other things that definitely will. It bothers me that animals ever appear on these lists, it just doesn’t seem…no wait, it just isn’t right. Number 8 on this list stood out more to me than any others however – Wild Horses.

Apparently Wild Horses are vanishing from America, but not for reasons you would think. They aren’t vanishing for lack of food or poaching; they aren’t vanishing like all the fish in the sea because America lives on a diet of horse meat and just can’t get enough. Wild horse populations are actually thriving. So why did they make this list? They made this list because the BLM (US Bureau of Land Management) is killing them off in mass numbers in order to “control” their population which “prevents them from starving.”

These horses mainly exist within states and areas where you can literally drive for hours and see absolutely nothing but sagebrush with no civilization in sight; yet the BLM feels that there are too many of them on public lands and they need to spend $50 - $70 million dollars a year to kill horses. Yep, you read that correctly, $50- $70 million of your tax dollars are being spent yearly to euthanize horses.

True, the BLM does what they think is best for landowners and for the horses. They do try to get some horses adopted or onto private land where they can live, but they are called Wild Horses for a reason, let them be wild. Let nature run itself BLM.

Here is a little more information on this subject if you care to further investigate and form your own opinion:
