What Book Got You Hooked!?

What Book Got You Hooked!?

Everyone’s first is always memorable, and First Book is inviting readers everywhere to share which book(s) first launched their love of reading. Now until September 15th, go to First Book and share the memories from childhood when you first discovered the joys of reading. The What Book Got You Hooked campaign’s idea is to help kids discover titles that may get them hooked on reading. Not only does this campaign seek to spark a wave of nostalgia, but First Book is also utilizing this approach to allow readers to vote on which state they believe should be granted a generous donation of 50,000 books.

The hype about this campaign is CRAZY and First Book invites celebrities to share their memories of favorite childhood books as well. If you were ever wondering what books helped form the minds of creative geniuses such as Neil Patrick Harris, Edward Norton, and Scarlett Johansson (to name a few) you’re in luck! First Book has a page of their website dedicated to allowing celebrity supporters to share what books kept them up at night. Authors like RL Stine and Lois Lowry also give readers a taste of what stories inspired them to write the books that many of us love reading.

The objective of First Book is to give children of low-income families the chance to read their own first new book. A new study proves that children of low-income communities only have access to one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. Statistics also prove that there is a direct correlation between literacy and poverty. Of adults with strong reading skills only 4% live in poverty. There are 26 million children living in poverty in the US. First Book is aiming to get already avid readers involved in helping children of low-income communities gain access to books that may improve their futures.

Remember, 50,000 books can help a lot of children. Last year’s 2007 What Book Got You Hooked campaign generated over 130,000 votes by the end of its two month voting period. I think we can do better than that this year (Yes, I did just challenge you). Readers, you have until midnight September 15th to cast your vote. Please help spread the word, and check back for updates about this awesome project! I look forward to reading your write-in responses about your childhood memories, and hope you look forward to reading mine as well!

Happy Birthday Eco-Libris!

Happy Birthday Eco-Libris!

July celebrates Eco-Libris’s first birthday! I am happy to write this blog to attest the many accomplishments this amazing company has achieved in just one short year! Eco-Libris has had measurable success in its first year, success that pacifies both the environmentalists and book enthusiasts in each of us.

As many of you know, Eco-Libris strives to lessen the environmental impact of book production, allowing readers the chance to plant a tree for every book they read. Eco-Libris also works with many book publishers, as well as authors, who seek to become more green. One goal of Eco-Libris is to work with readers to balance out half a million trees by the end of 2008, a goal that is challenging but attainable through the efforts of readers like you and me.

The success of their first year in business has been quite monumental! Already 50,005 books have been balanced, consequently planting 65,586 new trees in developing countries with help from their planting partners. Eco-Libris has also formed alliances with publishers and bookstores to help make balancing books even easier for readers.

Eco-Libris seeks to be an agent of change for the book industry, urging book publishers to make reading more environmentally sustainable by using recycled and eco-friendly material in book production. Please read my previous blog about his extraordinary company or visit theEco-Libris website if you’d like more information.

Can education help end poverty?

Can education help end poverty?

The Library Project seems to think so, as do I.

The Library Project is an organization which donates libraries to underfinanced schools in developing countries in hopes that the educational tools they provide may help bring an end to poverty in these nations. To them, "education is change".

There are many ways to get involved with this organization. They love monetary donations (who doesn't?), you can adopt an entire library, volunteer by hosting local events such as a book drive or by introducing The Library Project to people where you work who are in charge of corporate donations and/or of facilitating employee volunteerism campaigns.

I think I may just organize a book drive here where I work. Salt Lake City is known for having a plethora of children running around and I am sure employees here have stacks of old kids books just gathering dust which they would love to donate to such an amazing organization.

Be sure to check out their Facebook Group and please spread the word.

Do something and do it now!

Top 5 - Week 5 (after a week off)

Top 5 - Week 5 (after a week off)

Has it really been a month since I’ve been Top-5ing?! ☺ Why yes, yes it has. Happy Monday! I would’ve posted sooner but last week was full of transitions that kept me super busy. Let’s do this:

1. Congratul-8-tions to the class of 2008—pre-school, elementary school, middle school, high school and college! I went to my friend's English Department graduation at UCLA and lo and behold James Franco was also walking the stage! I didn't know he was also a creative writer and hoped to pursue an MFA. I'd love to workshop with him one day. I wanted to see my friends walk at their universities in Northern California, but I'm sure they were too busy being enlightened by their commencement speakerOprah—and making speeches of their own. ☺

2. Now that its summer I kind of have more time to read whatever I want, so I've taken up quite a few. There are what I’m starting with:

Dubliners by James Joyce
America's Best Short Stories 2007 by Stephen King
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Yes Man by Danny Wallace

My Amazon shopping list of books to read is endless. If I were a super hero, I'd want my super power to be able to touch any book and acquire all of its data, and be able to search for whatever answer I want and find it. Basically I want my mind to be the ultimate search engine data base. Paper beats rock and brains most definitely beat brute any day in my book!

Also, since it’s summer, my friends feel compelled to prevent me from falling into my workaholic tendencies and take me on spontaneous adventures. We were hanging out in Long Beach last night and when we left the bar my friends decided we should go check out Laguna Beach since we’ve never been down to the actual water. It was midnight. So we drive down. It just so happened that the grunions were hatching so we got to watch them flap back out into the ocean. Then they couldn’t remember where Pacific Coast Highway ended so they decided to find out. We followed it to a path that led us back on the 405S and ended up heading down to San Diego. I’m in and out of sleep at this point. Once there they decided the only reasonable thing to do at 3 o’clock in the morning was to go ghost hunting, so the first thing that pops up on my friend’s iPhone was “screaming” tree. We drive down to the creepy, isolated hills on the outskirts of San Diego, and I wake up in the car at 4:15am to us driving past an abandoned slaughterhouse down a very narrow dirt road toward a sole tree standing alone in a clearing. It was creepy. After that freaky encounter I directed them to my favorite optical illusion—gravity hill. We let the car roll backwards a good three times. ☺

The sheer randomness of this account has inspired me to write a story, if not my own slasher film. We’ll see if this goes anywhere. ☺

3. eBay Live! was last week and I was painfully jealous :) I will make it in 2010 (Orlando). I must! I love this year's location, CHICAGO ! The Navy Pier and the water surrounding the city and so much more. I think Roman is obligated to Top 5 with me, since he IS in the city where High Fidelity was filmed. ☺

4. I’m in the middle of moving and it’s prompting me to go through all of my stuff. I’ve heard people say that you should give away 30% of your possessions each year, and I definitely agree. In fact I’d like to give away more! I want to keep my life portable because I intend on traveling a lot throughout my life, so I must leave my pack-ratting days behind.

I have a TON of paper—notes, bank statements, and so many other unless sheets of paper from the pre e-statement age. I’m going to type up all of my paper notes and am thinking about scanning all paper documents that I don’t really need. Is that the best route to go? Tell me what you think, or if you have a better method for downsizing your life. Also, being an English major and avid word enthusiast I have a TON of books. I need to plant lots and lots of trees to balance it all out. ;)

5. I’ve always enjoyed Dave Matthews Band and their music videos but only recently have I finally sat down and taken the time to look into their career. I was amazed and have been very much inspired by their path and by their charitable measures. I am completely enamored and have a great deal of respect for them as individuals, and hopefully I’ll get to catch them live or meet them someday. ☺

Speaking about bands who do wonderful things, I just checked the results for the 30 Seconds to Mars auction and they raised over $8,000! Lovely!
