Bidding has come to a close on a torn up, cement covered, barely recognizable #34 David Ortiz Red Sox jersey.
Just kidding! Well, not really. That's actually what happened, but the jersey is more than a unwitting casualty of modern construction - it's legendary.
As I mentioned in a previous post, a (heroic, in my opinion) construction worker building the new stadium for the Yankees, buried a Red Sox jersey in the foundation, hoping to curse the Empire for years to come. Word leaked about his actions, the jersey was dug up, auctioned for charity and the rest is history.
When I originally posted, the bid was around $30,000, three days later my friend, Roman posted an update and the bid had more than doubled to $68,000. He bet that it would sell for $85,000.
Boy did he underestimate Red Sox fans.
As Bob Barker used to say, "Actual retail price is..." $175,100.
Congratualtions to the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute!
