Ellen G. 40, NYC-sh

I’m the director of Marketing at a large, not-quite-in-NYC publishing house, where I work on books about technology. I’m a wife and mother of 2 great kids.

I work full time, yet I try and make time to support causes that are near (literally) and dear to me, ranging from my daugther's school and the PTA, to her Girl Scout troop and youth soccer. I love finding creative ways to volunteer, and I strive to be a good example to parents about how you can stay involved in your kids life even if you have precious free time.

An interview with the DC Goodwill Fashionista May 5 2008 at 2:06 PM

One of the MANY great things to come out of BlogHer Business last month for me was my discovery of a really cool site, the DC Goodwill Fashion Blog. You may think, what does Goodwill have to do with fashion? Ah, my dear, that saddens me, because you are missing out on some incredible potential finds.

Rules of Volunteering, Part 2 April 23 2008 at 6:28 PM

Whenever I talk with people about my life, I somehow always come back to the different volunteer activities that I am involved with. Whether it's talking about coaching my daughter's soccer team, or helping out at a Girl Scout event, these things are what defines me. There's nothing that connects me... More

Rules of Volunteering, Part 1 April 18 2008 at 8:44 PM

Let's say you're sitting there, reading this blog. You've started eating better, thinking greener, and want to do even more. How you can expend that energy that's just busting at the seams to do some good?

The first thing is to find a cause close to your heart. Let's call that Rule #1 - if it matters... More

Time to give April 16 2008 at 7:28 AM

Recently, I picked up my daughter from a friend's house after a playdate. I had run there after work and had 15 minutes to make it to pick up my other child. The mom asked if I had a minute to stay and chat, and I said, yes, although it would literally be a minute.

She proceeded to prattle on and... More

"The Celebrity Apprentice" Gives Back March 27 2008 at 11:00 AM

As the parent of a child with food allergies, I'm always happy to see someone spreading the word about the good work done by the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network. This week, NBC's The Celebrity Apprentice will feature a showdown between country music star Trace Adkins and vociferous Brit Piers Morgan... More

Thanks for the kudos, which I really wasn't looking for, but I will take them anyhow. :0-)

We all have to do something, right?

@JD:

Not a rant at all - it's totally related. You want the help, figure out how to get it, as long as it works for the cause. I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Posted 3 months ago to It all started with a bag...

I might have to put a few of these cool bags up for bid on eBay. I'm sensing a great cause auction idea brewing here.

Cat - Adobe did sponsor the bag, which was good, but you could have a bag with multiple logos on it. It would look like a NASCAR car, but that's ok!

JD - Flash drives all around then!

You tweet like a Maltese falcon June 30 2008 at 4:47 PM

Greetings from beautiful Malta!  I’m here attending my company’s EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) sales meeting.  I arrived yesterday and spent most of the day in meetings today.  I did manage to sneak out for an hour in the sun by the pool, but don’t tell my boss.*
Getting here was not half the fun.  I flew Alitalia out of JFK Saturday afternoon.  The flight was delayed for 2 hours while we waited out a thunderstorm.  I don’t mean to be the “ugly American”,... More

required readings for summer travel June 24 2008 at 10:14 AM

The website Delicious Baby just posted a great article on traveling with a food allergic child.  It’s one of the few sources I’ve found for information that gives you the feeling that “yes I can travel on an airplane and my child will survive.”  I remember reading something on a Disney-related site (written by a parent and not affiliated with Disney) that pretended to give info about how to handle food allergies at Disney, and it started out by saying “of course,...
