Where the horses are wild....

By JD on August 6 2008 at 10:12 AM

Where the horses are wild....

I just read an article on Walletpop about the top 25 things vanishing from America. The countdown covers a lot of things that will surely not be missed and other things that definitely will. It bothers me that animals ever appear on these lists, it just doesn’t seem…no wait, it just isn’t right. Number 8 on this list stood out more to me than any others however – Wild Horses.

Apparently Wild Horses are vanishing from America, but not for reasons you would think. They aren’t vanishing for lack of food or poaching; they aren’t vanishing like all the fish in the sea because America lives on a diet of horse meat and just can’t get enough. Wild horse populations are actually thriving. So why did they make this list? They made this list because the BLM (US Bureau of Land Management) is killing them off in mass numbers in order to “control” their population which “prevents them from starving.”

These horses mainly exist within states and areas where you can literally drive for hours and see absolutely nothing but sagebrush with no civilization in sight; yet the BLM feels that there are too many of them on public lands and they need to spend $50 - $70 million dollars a year to kill horses. Yep, you read that correctly, $50- $70 million of your tax dollars are being spent yearly to euthanize horses.

True, the BLM does what they think is best for landowners and for the horses. They do try to get some horses adopted or onto private land where they can live, but they are called Wild Horses for a reason, let them be wild. Let nature run itself BLM.

Here is a little more information on this subject if you care to further investigate and form your own opinion:

Here comes baby

By JD on July 29 2008 at 11:54 AM

Here comes baby

I've read that not having kids is probably one of the best things you can do for the environment. Not bringing into this world another little human who
creates mass amounts of new waste which in turn creates even more CO2, is something people should consider even more so these days, especially with so many orphans out there that need parents and loving homes.

My wife and I got greedy and decided to have one anyway……

As I mentioned in a previous post, my wife is pregnant and I am about to be a first time dad. I am going to do my best to make sure that having this baby does not also have a huge impact on the environment and that she grows up with values which make her a good, aware, eco-friendly little person. There is so much to consider before she even arrives however.

Here is brief list of what we have been stressing over as of late:
• Buying baby furniture made from sustainable materials
• Buying diapers that don’t sit in a landfill for 50 some-odd years
• Making sure that as we remodel and decorate her nursery we buy eco-friendly paint and building materials.
• Buying baby products from companies which have the Earth in mind and make it part of their mission.
• Her dating jerks when she gets older…..oh wait, that’s not something I need to stress about yet, but I sure as hell am.

Like I said, I’ll be keeping you up to date on this interesting journey I am embarking on and hopefully you can help keep me on the straight and narrow towards my goal of a green baby. I am sure those days will come when I think to myself….”this is too hard, I’m taking the easy route”.

Do something and do it now!

Can education help end poverty?

By JD on July 23 2008 at 11:00 AM

Can education help end poverty?

The Library Project seems to think so, as do I.

The Library Project is an organization which donates libraries to underfinanced schools in developing countries in hopes that the educational tools they provide may help bring an end to poverty in these nations. To them, "education is change".

There are many ways to get involved with this organization. They love monetary donations (who doesn't?), you can adopt an entire library, volunteer by hosting local events such as a book drive or by introducing The Library Project to people where you work who are in charge of corporate donations and/or of facilitating employee volunteerism campaigns.

I think I may just organize a book drive here where I work. Salt Lake City is known for having a plethora of children running around and I am sure employees here have stacks of old kids books just gathering dust which they would love to donate to such an amazing organization.

Be sure to check out their Facebook Group and please spread the word.

Ch-ch-ch-changes......

By JD on July 17 2008 at 12:00 PM

Ch-ch-ch-changes......

Let me start by giving a short debrief of my life in the past month.

The end of last month saw eBay Live! in Chicago come and go, of which I do all the staffing for both eBay Customer Support centers (about 210 people attend). We had our CEO visit both centers and I had to be on-site in each center for those tours (more flying), plus work to plan the annual Canada Day BBQ in Vancouver during the visit. Luckily I had my awesome coordinator helping me in Vancouver with that one.
During the meetings, movers were at my apartment packing up all our stuff and the Sunday following I jumped into a rental car with a 7 month pregnant wife and 2 cats and drove to SLC (It was not as bad as it sounds). Whew.....let me catch my breath...... I didn't have any time to unpack in SLC as we had to plan employee all-hands meetings in both SLC and Vancouver for the following week, so my wife was stuck at home with all the boxes while I did a meeting here and then flew back to Vancouver the next day (can't keep me away long). I jumped on a 5:40am flight home last friday in order to make it to our first doctor's appointment with our new baby doctor here in SLC and now, 5 days later, finally found a free minute to blog.

So I am now based in Salt Lake City and have been saving up all my stories until I can find time to breathe and possibly begin writing again. You thought you were rid of me, but it's not that easy!!

By the way....I have a confession to make....I gave in and accepted the upgrade to a SUV at the rental car place. They are apparently giving those things away to anyone who will take them these days. I must admit, it really made the move a lot more comfortable, but I am a bit ashamed. However, I have taken transit and walked everywhere for the past 4 years, so I guess I can give off a little CO2...right? (there you go JD, make excuses)

Anyway.....that's my life in a nutshell for the past month. A big thanks to my fellow bloggers for writing double time in my absence.

Do something and do it now,
JD

My first fourth in five

By JD on July 7 2008 at 11:16 PM

My first fourth in five

I was happy to have been here to celebrate my first 4th of July holiday in nearly 5 years this past weekend. There is nothing quite like a 4th of July BBQ, boy have I missed the annual tradition. I hope everyone had as nice and relaxing a long holiday weekend as I did.

Big changes in my life as of late and lots to begin writing about as soon as I get settled into my new life back here in the states. Stay tuned for more.

Cheers,
JD

Can Babies be Environmentally Friendly?

By JD on June 11 2008 at 11:31 AM

Can Babies be Environmentally Friendly?

This blogger is about to be a dad!!
My wife is due with our first child at the end of August and (I know you are wondering) it's a girl!!! Of course we are going to raise her to be as green as possible, but our big concern right now is....how to be green while raising a baby. We not only want to make sure she has an Earth to inherit, but that the process of raising her is as green as we can make it. Luckily, there are blogs and books galore dedicated solely to being green parents and raising green children (not literally, that'd be a bit scary).

Let me just say, the thought of bringing a baby into this world is not only extremely exciting but also extremely scary!! I've watched way too many episodes of Intervention and I am scared as hell because now I "know" that all it takes is one screw-up and your kids could be on a path to a life of addiction. Way too much pressure I tell you.....way too much.

Although the last thing on many of your minds at this point is having kids (as it probably should be), it is about to completely consume my life so I have decided to start writing a weekly "green parent/baby" post. It'll be all about eco-friendly diapers, buying green clothing, BCP free bottles and every other sort of uber interesting baby/parenting stuff I know you can't wait to learn.

This may alienate many of you so I promise to still write about my disdain with the current state of popular music and the un-green practices it encourages, post gruesomely cute cartoons with strong messages and write posts which tend to not really seem to go anywhere at times. If you're lucky I might even share a baby picture with you this Fall; but I promise to wait until my little lady no longer looks like a weird lizard child.

A Bad Case of the Humans

By JD on June 6 2008 at 12:00 PM

I stumbled across this video today and just needed to share it with all of you.
** Be warned though, if cute cartoon blood turns your stomach, don't watch **

We are heading down an ugly path folks....
True, people are being more green but we all need to do so much more, and those of us that are trying need to try extra hard in order to make up for those who aren't.

Just Listen.....

By JD on June 2 2008 at 12:00 PM

Just Listen.....

Anyone that knows me well knows that if I ever leave the house alone there are headphones in my ears plugged in to an iPod in my pocket. Music is playing at least 10 hours or more of every day for me. In fact, iTunes is bumping away right now. This morning was no different, I went for a jog con headphones (excuse the spanglish, it just seemed to work); then, after showering and some breakfast, left the house again to run errands....headphones secured tightly in my ear canals. [On a side note, Shure makes the best headphones around. You don't know how much of your music you are missing until you try listening to it through truly great headphones.]
After returning home with my re-usable bags stuffed full with a whole bunch of new art supplies and a new mouse for my computer (I went wireless this time), I needed to get back outside to enjoy the rare sunny day in Vancouver and finish my errands, but you will never guess what I did.......this crazy thought popped into my head and I decided to leave the old iPod (and headphones) at home!!!! I know......it's sheer madness!!!

I left the house this afternoon with the sole intention of listening to and completely taking in the world around me; the birds, the wind, the cars, the protesters at the art gallery and every single person I passed while out and about. The first thing I noticed was not only did I hear more things, I saw more things happening around me, I even smelled more things (apparently you can smell Subway's fresh-baked bread from a block away). It is weird to think that I am usually so engrossed in my music, all of my other senses go into hibernation. In all honesty, that is sort of my goal......I want to disconnect and music helps me do so. I don't want to hear people yelling, sirens blaring, crows making all their noise, the homeless guy on the corner who has been "trying to get enough for a bus ticket back to Montreal" for the past 3 years (are bus tickets really that much?). I realized though that by disconnecting I have also missed friends reuniting, kids laughing, protesters saying what needs to be said (and heard), tourists asking for directions (for some reason I take great pleasure in giving them) and the homeless person on the corner "trying to get enough for a bus ticket back to Montreal" (he just wants someone to acknowledge he exists and to care). Sans the headphones I noticed even more the diversity this city has to offer, I realized that when I try to block out the things I don't want to take in, I also block out the good things......the things that need to be heard. The things that make this world truly amazing.

I know we are a digital generation, an iPod generation, so I challenge each and every one of you to leave the house one day each week sans the iPod (or similar). Go out and listen to the world around you, smell the flowers, eavesdrop on conversations, take yourself outside of the iBox you've put yourself in and re-connect with the world. True, you hear a bunch of crap you don't want to hear, but think about all the great stuff you could be missing as well. Nothing beats a baby laughing or a couple fighting over waiting in line to try something on at the new H&M that just opened (seriously, this is funny!)

Gimme that planet grandma!

By JD on May 23 2008 at 12:00 PM

Gimme that planet grandma!

In speaking with my parents, their friends and people about their age, I have noticed that being green and doing things to help the environment is fairly low on their list of priorities and not so much because they don't care, but more so because they feel environmentalism is a youth movement, something for the younger generations.....kind of like VCR remotes (VCR's???) and moving picture shows. Then there are those that miss the concept all together and are after the WIIFM (What's in it for me?).

A few months back my mom was telling me how she and my dad were looking into new cars and with all they had heard recently about hybrids, the thought of getting one had crossed their minds. They did a lot of research and decided that for the extra cost of a hybrid car as opposed to a regular straight gas guzzler, the money they would save in gas compared to the extra cost for buying hybrid would not be all that much. WHOA!!!! put on the brakes......"Mom", I said, "You are pretty much missing the point entirely". It is not often that I actually speak up when either of my parents say something signaling they really just don't get it. I usually shrug it off and give it the old "it's just their generation" excuse, but I felt it was time for a little education.

Being green and doing something to save this awesome planet of ours isn't always cheap.....okay actually, it is damn near never cheap. Buying organic food is more expensive, hybrid cars cost more than regular cars, green household items cost much more and sustainable living is simply not easy. Guess what folks? That's not the point.....you cannot look at being green with a WIIFM? attitude. How about looking at it in a WIIFMGC? (What's in it for my grand children?) frame of mind instead?

I'm not saying that no one over the age of 40 gets the green movement; I just think it might be a good idea to reach out to those that don't understand and try to help them do so. Kids....when your parents sit you down to talk to you about where babies come from and how drugs turn your brain into an egg cooked sunny side up, hear what they have to say and then also make sure they understand what being green is all about and how doing something now will ensure that your own kids will have an inhabitable planet to live on when they come around (now that you know where they come from) :)

A career you can believe in

By JD on May 9 2008 at 2:06 PM

There is a new book out called "Making a Living While Making a Difference: The Expanded Guide to Creating Careers with a Conscience" written by Melissa Everett. It discusses a shift in what people are looking for much more so these days in their careers and in the companies they work for with regards to personal, environmental and social issues.

Is it possible to make a difference in the world and also squeak out a decent living? Does the company you work for contribute to our environmental problem or are they helping find a solution? This book hopes to help point you down the right path of business success coupled with environmentalism and social good. The days of having to be poor in order to rise the executive ranks because it was either career or being green and socially aware may finally be over.

I currently work for what I believe to be one of the greenest companies on the planet. You might not hear in the news or read in the papers or trade magazines about my company being exceptionally green because it's building are not all made of reclaimed lumber, recycled rubber tires or aluminum cans and we don't own a small country sized piece of land covered in windmills to run all of our servers. So how could we possibly be the greenest company ever?? Think about it.....what is the first thing that pops into your head when you think eBay? Buying or selling old/weird stuff. eBay has epitomized "one's man's junk is another man's treasure" and created what could easily be seen as the worlds largest public recycling program. Why throw something out when you can essentially recycle it and make money doing it?

I strongly believe in what the company for which I work is based upon. In addition to what I mentioned above, we have a growing worldwide Green Team and many different internal programs that are charity, environmental and social conscious related. I know I have a career at a company holding many of the same values as I and this is very important to me as I get older and as my professional life grows. In all honesty, who knows if I will be at eBay until I retire; but if I am not, I know that salary and benefits will not be the only thing I look for in choosing where I go next. Being green and being successful may go hand in hand in this new age of ours.

Green Everything.....

By JD on May 7 2008 at 2:06 PM

I was reading Treehugger this morning and thought to myself, "What if not everyone in the world has discovered this amazing site yet?". So then I thought, "Self....you need to share it with the masses just to be sure". If you already know of it, but don't check in frequently ,then it might be time to be reminded of it's uber sweetness and if you have never heard of it......what the hell are you waiting for!?!? Check out Treehugger now; you are sure to be in awe, as it is filled with all sorts of green awesomeness. Treehugger is quite hip (is there such thing as anything green being un-hip?) and very well written with all kinds of different areas to explore. You could get lost for days (or at least hours) exploring this bad boy.

My favorite section thus far?
How to Go Green Guide. This section covers how to "green" damn near anything.
Green your garden, green your wedding, green your kitchen, green your furniture, etc, etc.....the list goes on and on and on.
Wait a second.....Green Your Sex Life!?!?, now we're talking!!! This has got to be the first time I have ever read an article about having a green sex life. This opens up all kinds of possibilities. Can you imagine all the new pick-up lines this topic could sprout?

Here's an idea......make some up and share your best.

Do something and do it now,

From world record athlete to dolphin hero

By JD on April 27 2008 at 11:49 PM

From world record athlete to dolphin hero

I ran across an article today in the Vancouver Province that really intrigued me. It is about a woman named Mandy-Rae Cruickshank, a former freediving world record-holder from Vancouver who was recruited by Jim Clark, the founder of Netscape, for a very unique covert opportunity to help dolphins in Japan with a group from the Oceanic Preservation Society.

The fish-like skills she had in the water made it possible for the team from the OPS Society to get into an area of Japanese water which they had not been able to access successfully in the past because of tight security and limitations with having to carry in mass amounts of diving equipment.

I strongly encourage you to read the Vancouver Province article and visit the OPS Society web page to watch the preview for the documentary they are making about Taiji's yearly dolphin massacre via the links above. While you are at the OPS web site be sure to click around and find out much more about what they represent and how you can help if so inclined.

Welcome back old friends

I ran across quite the unique item listed on eBay today and it perfectly coincided with the return of many of the shows that I have been missing for the past few months. This Writers Guild strike sign is being auctioned off to raise money for the Hilltop Nursery School Child & Family Development Center.

I don't think many of us realized how a writers strike would have such an impact on our evenings at home after work. No new scripts were being written for our favorite teen dramas or any of the 7 Law & Orders. Conan, Leno and Letterman had no new material to quip about in their opening dialogs (which is odd, considering Conan used to be a writer himself....did he forget how?) We had to suffer through numerous "unscripted" reality shows probably put together at the last minute in network big whig brainstorming sessions, because there are no scripts for these shows, they are 100% real life and require no writing or plots. Uhhhh.....sure...right....okay then. (on a side note, does it seem like they are starting to run out of new ideas for these things? They really seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel lately)

Anyway.....it was horrible, many of us had to resort to actually turning the TV off and going outside to breathe...GASP....fresh air and get some exercise during those awful couple of months!!! We actually had to go and socialize with real-life families and neighbors instead of watching them on TV!! NOOOOOOO!!! Interacting with real living breathing people!! It was awful I tell you, a living nightmare.

All I can say is that I am glad the strike finally ended, new shows are starting to cycle their way back onto the networks and I can finally start reforming that spot on the couch that was once perfectly molded to my butt.

One way to learn more

One way to learn more

As part of Earth Day initiatives, Apple has created an entire section within iTunes filled with audio & video podcasts, "green" music, TV shows & episodes and audio books all about being green and earth conscious.
And wouldn't you just know it...guess what song is at the top of their list of "green" music? Yep, good old Marvin Gaye's "Mercy, Mercy Me (the ecology)"

Be sure to check out this new section, "The Green Room", and be sure to subscribe to a podcast or nine. They are a great way to pass the time while taking transit to and from work everyday...hint, hint.

Music with a Message - Pt. 2

By JD on April 15 2008 at 7:00 PM

Music with a Message - Pt. 2

Music is one of the biggest influencer's in the world, especially upon younger generations. People often dress a certain way because it is what other fans or artists that perform that genre of music dress like. If big enough artists sings about a certain type of alcohol, it becomes the new "it" drink. They sing about the clothes they wear....so guess what? Yep, you now have flocks of sheep...oops, I mean people...wearing that brand. Do you think the same would happen if these "shepherds" sang about something that actually encouraged people to do something positive in their lives or in the world? If any of the current hip-hop mega stars began extolling the benefits of driving a hybrid car or taking public transit rather than rollin' on 22's in gas guzzling Hummers or Escalades, would it make a difference? Does it even matter to them? Do they know they can make a difference? Hell yes, they know. They know that you will buy what they say is cool, so why don't they make environmentalism cool? Why don't they use the power they have to make a difference? It's an obvious answer......environmentalism is not "cool" to sing or make videos about. No one gets laid in the music industry because they are environmentally conscious, it takes jewelry, fancy cars, expensive clothes, hip slang and dope shoes. Ahhh.......you have got to love this material world of ours. Too bad it won't be around much longer.

I'm not saying don't listen to music if it doesn't have a positive message about saving the earth....hell we all need to have fun and listen to mind numbing stuff every now and then, but we don't need to follow like sheep the messages that the mind numbing stuff spews. Just think to yourself every once in a while, "who benefits from the message?" If it is car companies, liquor companies, jewelers, shoe companies, etc...it's probably not best to buy into what they are selling.

I really do believe that we will see more and more musicians begin to use their influence for good. Not to say there are bands that don't do it now, Marvin Gaye was not the last to care about this world of ours, you just don't see it very often in the popular music of today. Look outside of the top 40 and the stuff you get fed over and over on the radio and you will find many bands out there with positive messages of change. Hell, pretty much the entire punk movement in England stemmed from the youth of that day being fed up with the government of the time. Hardly any of them were even musicians (and it was easy to tell), but they knew that music could influence people and was a great way to share their frustrations and messages about the need for change with others. That same message carries over into much of the music that was born from early 70's punk right into today. The wave of politically charged, socially conscious music which they gave birth to will hopefully one day sweep into the top 40 stuff that influences the vast majority of people in the world. There are bands out there now, you just don't hear them on the radio...environmentalism and social responsibility doesn't sell apparently. The record companies don't see money to be made in environmentalism and until they do, why do what's right? I guess there isn't much money in doing what is right.

"So popular music is destroying the world...right?"
Nope, not at all....
Music to me is life. All kinds of music. Music inspires everyone and that is why people are so adamant and defensive about what they love. We need the purely fun stuff but we also need something positive to balance it out and we need to be able to recognize the difference. If you are going to buy into what musicians are selling you, then at least buy into ideas that make you a better person or the world a bit better place. We need the music industry to realize that they have to stop feeding us purely crap and we need to show them that we aren't going to buy into it anymore. We need musicians to realize the power they wield and start doing something positive in their music with that power. Let the music you love actually inspire you to do something good for a change. Believe it or not, we can control the music industry rather than them controlling us. If we tell them that we are tired of teenage bimbos and 5 mpg Escalades, they will listen.

The first song to really make me think about my footprint and the impact that we have on this earth? It's a little bold, but it gets the point across.
"...We call earth mother, but we are all mother *expletives*. We drink her blood, eat her flesh, take her love for granted. We feed her poison and in return we'll reap what we've planted, rest assured."
The song is "I'll be Damned", the band is Into Another. The entire song is actually about men and the horrors that we have forced upon the world as a whole. We take and take and take and take, not thinking about what will happen when there is nothing left to take. Every end result has a cause.

In the words of another of my favorite bands
"You are guilty by your ignorance...ignorance is not innocence."
Get out there and learn, educate yourselves, the world is not going to fix itself. Don't continue to support industries or companies that don't care and aren't embracing change. Learn which companies these are and do something to encourage them to change or take your business elsewhere.
It all starts with you, it all begins with the smallest action, the faintest thought of "what if?".

Don't wait for someone else to start the revolution.
Do something and do it now.
