So many of us get caught up in a generalization of a problem that we feel that in order to contribute to the overall solution we must tackle it head on. Like you said, there are smaller chapters of many causes that are often more accessible. The "smaller" efforts are often what can prepare you to eventually take on something "big" without stretching yourself too thin. Local charities often act as catalysts for volunteers to recognize their passion(s) about many other issues.

the thing with ferris wheels is that they're deceptive, they're always much more appealing before you get on. After a few completed rotations I usually feel nauseous or bored and want to get off, and then it takes forever to do so! Kinda like relationships.. j/k.

For the most part, it's the things I haven't done that get to me. When I was younger I had a list of goals I wanted to complete within a certain timeframe, and there are a few BIG goals that I haven't achieved, like publishing a collection of poetry or moving to a bigger city. I also wish I hadn't fallen asleep during "La Reve" when I was in Vegas a few months ago.

“You buy furniture. You tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life. Buy the sofa, then for a couple years you're satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you've got your sofa issue handled. Then the right set of dishes. Then the perfect bed. The drapes. The rug. Then you're trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you. ~Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club, Chapter 5

I completely agree that our society is filled with excess. It's always a bit depressing when I get my monthly bank statement or go through receipts and see how much of my money goes towards frivolous activities and consumptions that are no where necessary for my survival. Good post. We should all be a little more aware of the “toxins” we can eliminate in our lives.

Posted 7 months ago to Style, Charity, Gin ...you can count me in?

I realize that the haste of my idealistic projections often falls short of my expectations. Even if it’s passive, at least it’s activism, right? Although I would love to say my involvement in my favorite causes is mostly “hands on,” I am guilty of pledging a dollar amount, flaunting a product, or buying green before I render my precious time... unless, of course, the active activism engenders a social activity. I think it’s true with everyone, unless Oprah tells you to do it.
